Jennie Gerhardt Theodore Dreiser Books

I wonder how many people are taking up Theodore Dreiser’s JENNIE GERHARDT as a result of Saul Bellow’s fondness for it as recorded in Zachary Leader’s new biography, THE LIFE OF SAUL BELLOW: TO FAME AND FORTUNE. Well, I for one believe we all owe Bellow and Leader thanks for steering us to a classic American novel we might otherwise have missed.

As a young man in the 1930s, Bellow would have read the book in the version that was published in 1911. Against his better instincts and in the interests of getting published, Dreiser gave in to demands for extensive cuts. There was to be no criticism of society or of organized religion, for instance. In 1992, the University of Pennsylvania Press published the restored text, which is repeated in this Viking Penguin edition. It will be interesting to see, in the eventual second volume of Leader’s biography, if Bellow returned to the book after publication of the restored text and, if so, what he had to say about it.

Dreiser’s flaws are many, but his virtues, including his regard for his characters, win him a secure place in American literature. It’s been a while since I cared as much for a fictive character as I cared for Jennie Gerhardt.

Jennie Gerhardt Theodore Dreiser Books Reviews

Wonderful book with a page turner of a story. The simple, direct writing style is highly engaging and the conversations so real, you feel you may have had some of them yourself. Having read Sister Carrie, The Trilogy of Desire and American Tragedy, I am a big fan of Dreiser...but I think I like this one best.
Drieser's novel looks at the struggles and challenges of a Jennie, a poor, uneducated young woman. Like Sister Carrie, we don't get the opportunity to really know the internal thoughts of the titled character. That deficiency limits the connection I had with the book, I felt like I knew her "husband" better than I did her- even though he was often more indecisive than she was. Still, it was interesting to see how their lengthy relationship played out during a time when living together was socially unacceptable.
Love Theodor Dreiser style of writing, his command of the English language is superb. The book is geared more towards the female reader I believe. It is beautiful sensitive and a perfect picture of the period. I liked it immensely.
I have read all of Theodore Dreiser's books. His style has a moral and philosophical tone to every book. This book is an old theme . Young girl from a poor family gets pregnant and all of the trials and tribulations that she experiences. It will seem so old fashioned to readers that want a fast paced book. I have loved all of his books, especially A Great American Tragedy. For those who want to go back in time and read a true literary giant this could be a start.
Dreiser's classic Sister Carrie was a favorite in my school days and The Financier is now a favorite. Jennie is like a time capsule of simpler days yet the characters are easy to understand because they echo the present. If the plot seems rather slow it's an accurate portrayal of those times - and we read it in times that move too fast!
I doubt if in the history of literature any novelist developed his or characters as good as Theodore Dreiser. The main characters of An American Tragedy, Sister Carrie, Jennie Gerhardt, the Financier, and his other novels are highly realistic and extremely well developed. The stories are absorbing and nicely structured. It is unfortunate that this great writer did not get the Nobel Prize in Literature and even today he is not getting the recognition that he deserves. His two novels, An American Tragedy and Sister Carrie, should be placed among the greatest novels ever written.
Mencken thought this was a superior book and I agree. It could have been edited down by at least 50 pages. It has a great story line about class conflicts and societal mores. The one flaw is that the two main characters agonize over their decisions until you're ready to shout "do something already!" And that is where the excess length comes in, because the characters mull and chew and ruminate some more over the same knotty problem. Now I agree that worriers (like me) in fact do the same thing in real life. We get wound up in knots thinking about our problems since all the options have down sides. On the plus side, there are a group of interesting characters and a story line that will have you guessing until the end. Recommended.
